59 Soul Food Fundraiser Fellow Alumni, I am asking you to support my daughter, Danita, Soul Food Fundraiser on this Saturday, September 18th at the Masonic Lodge. As you may know, Danita was born and raised in Chapel Hill and has been working and volunteering in the community upon returning from graduate school fifteen years ago. She has always been willing to lend her skills and talents to help anyone who has needed it in Chapel Hill, often asking nothing in return. Currently, she is attending classes at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Danita has a great interest in documenting the history of African Americans in Orange and Chatham counties. As you know, I too believe that it is important to document our rich history as a legacy for our children. This fundraiser is to purchase audio, video and software equipment to capture and preserve those stories. In the meantime, If you have a story or piece of history that you would like to share, please contact her at danitasdesk@yahoo.com or call me at (919) 260-8920. Plates for the fundraiser are $7 and food will be sold from 11-2 and from 4-7. Please plan to allow us do the cooking for one of your meals on Saturday and support a great cause which will benefit us and our children. Sincerely Yours, Dave 9/16/2010 True

69 Brain Attacks Good Day Brothers and Sisters; When our mother was battling cancer in the latter stage, she was in excuriating pain, to the point that she was doing a long low painful laced-moan. I asked her what was the pain like and she said to me, "Do you remember the pain that you had when you had Chartie?" and I said, 'Yes". She then said, "Multiply that pain by a million". We convinced her to take pain medicine. She did not respond well to it. When all the pain medicine was out of her body, she said to us, "Do not give me anythings else for pain, because I do not have control of my mind, as long as I have control of my mind, I can deal with the pain"! She did not have enough time for the doctors to find a pain medicine that would not negatively affect her mind. She could control her mind by simply not taking the medicine for pain. People who have mental illness are not afforded that option! Can you imagine a brain attack, whether it be intentional or unintentional? Our brothers and sisters who live with mental illness, brains are under such attacks all the time until after much trial and error, and, medicines are found that help to alleviate those attacks. Now you have success with the proper medicines, but, because of the stigma attached to mental illness, you do not have a place where you are wanted, warmly welcomed each day, encouraged to dream and do all you can to fulfill those dreams, and validated as a productive citizen and person. But wait, you do! Club Nova provides such a community for persons living with presistent and severe mental illness. Club Nova's annual Tea Room and Art Show will be held October 4-9, 2010 in celebration of the National Alliance on Mental Illness' (NAMI) Mental Illness Awareness Week. Members of the public are invited to join our clubhouse staff and members each day from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. to enjoy light lunch and live music performed by local artists including Jim Smith and Tim Stambough. Artwork by members of the clubhouse will also be on display. Through its annual Tea Room event launched in 2009, Club Nova hopes to raise awareness about Club Nova, its mission and its place in the community. The annual event serves to increase Club Nova's presence in the community by opening its doors to allow community members to see work that Club Nova staff and members accomplish every day in order to keep the Clubhouse running smoothly. It also provide a venue for memers to display their remarkable assortment of skills and talents, such as members' artworks which hang on the clubhouse walls each day. The event will be held at the Club Nova Clubhouse located at 102 D West Main Street. Tickets will be sold for $5 at the door. Please join Club Nova for a well-deserved celebration of Club Nova and its members in conjuction with NAMI's Mental Illness Awareness Week. Tea Room at a Glance October 4th through October 9th 12:00-2:00 p.m. each day Tours, Art Display, Lunch, Live Music Tickets available for $5 at the door You will be welcomed with arms wide open. It is one of my favorite communities! Thank you. With much love, Esphur 10/5/2010 True

77 Mighty Tiger-Hometown Hero Brothers and Sisters, Please join me in congratulating our classmate and schoolmate, Mrs. Delores James Farrington, '57, Lincoln High School. I am posting this on our website, too. We continue to roar! Esphurt First Part: Arminta (Daughter of Tiger) Eunice Delores Farrington was awarded Missionary of the Year on Sunday, January 9, 2011, by the Missionary Society of St. Paul AME Church. I would guess the only one surprised by this recognition, was Delores! As the President of the Missionary Society Dr. Rose Bynum was reading the description of the individual to receive this year’s honor, I sat there thinking… that sure sounds just like my mom. When the organizations president began describing this year’s honoree as someone who works tirelessly behind the scenes to get the job done, I knew it was her. She went on to say: · “The one who puts in long hours but refuses to ever be openly recognized or accept any acknowledgement “, I thought it might be her · “The one who makes phone calls and sends emails begging and pleading with others to step up to the plate for one cause after the other - from sun up to sun down”, I knew it was her · “The one who makes sure that every detail is in place for the organizations events, from the speakers, to the program, to the decorations, the venue, and the menu”, I knew · “The person who squeezes the ever shrinking budget because somebody called and they need help, and no is not an option”, I really knew it then · “The one who reaches into her own pocket (and when she said reach, I knew how far down and how deep) when the budget is flat spent out”... I knew for sure. I knew for sure, because Delores Farrington, a native of Chapel Hill, and life member of St. Paul AME Church, would do no less to pay homage to her parents, Jacob Monroe and Minnie Cuthbertson James. The James’ were also members of St. Paul since coming to Chapel Hill in the early 1920’s. Growing up at the corner of Franklin and Roberson Streets, just like her father, Delores is a Keeper of the Church Keys, and a member of the Board of Trustees. She will do most any and everything she can to assist a member of her church or her community that is in need. Like her mother, she serves every organization she’s a member of with selfless tenacity, and with a deep sense of pride and responsibility. In addition to being a member of the Missionary Society, and the Board of Trustees, she’s a member of the Lay Organization. Delores retired from UNC Hospitals as a Psychiatric Nurse. Nursing was a natural fit for her passion to nurture and take care of others. She is driven by her desire to attend to someone else’s needs. It is evident by the countless number of friends, family and sometimes perfect strangers who resort to her for compassionate counseling, doses of mother-wit, words of wisdom, or a shoulder to cry on. As a result, so much of what she gives comes back in mega doses of admiration from tots to teens, old timers and all in between love - Ms. Delores. Most people would think that Delores does not like to be in the forefront because she’s shy, or detests public speaking. Actually, she’s quite eloquent, and her close friends will tell you she’s far from shy. Being her daughter, I think I know her as well as anyone. She’s most like my grandmother Minnie in this respect. She not shy at all, she’s just genuinely HUMBLE. That’s a lesson she learned as a young child from both my grandparents, God loves a humble spirit! Second Part: Original Message ----- From: Stutts, Ron To: mamad4591@aol.com Cc: mmclend2@bellsouth.net ; Stutts, Ron ; Buckley, Molly Sent: Monday, January 17, 2011 4:54 PM Subject: WCHL Hometown Hero for Tuesday, January 18th, 2011-DELORES FARRINGTON Delores, it was a real pleasure talking with you this afternoon. I can tell, right away, that you are all the things Mae said you were when she nominated you for our Hometown Hero recognition. You will be honored all day tomorrow here on WCHL, and I know you won't like being in the spotlight, but you definitely deserve it. It's because of people like you that this community is such a great place to live. We have to keep that spirit of community service alive, and you have the ability to inspire others to put themselves out there, too. I'm attaching your announcement so you can hear it, and share it with everybody, unless you're too "shy" to do that! I know you've been extremely important to the success of St. Paul AME Church over the years, and I also know how important St. Paul was to Rebecca Clark. I knew Rebecca quite well, through my friendship with Doug, and I've spent many hours sitting on her couch listening to the way the world really is, according to Rebecca. There was not, and never will be another one quite like her. Your announcement will be aired at about 6:55, 7:55, and 8:55 am, while I'm on the air in the morning, and also around 5:50 pm, during our Evening News. In addition, it will be featured all day on our website, which is www.1360wchl.com. The announcement will then go into our archives on the site, and anyone can access it at any time. As I mentioned, you will get an invitation in the mail next January to attend our annual Village Pride Awards luncheon, honoring all the honorees from the entire year. We just want to invite you to come have lunch with us, as our way of saying thanks for all you do. This event is always underwritten by our sponsor, Performance Auto Mall of Chapel Hill. We've been doing this together, since the program began back in 2002. Thank you, again, for taking the time to talk with me! It was fun getting to know you a little better. And Mae, thank you for nominating Delores for this award. And by the way, you better watch out, because Delores says she's going to get you back. Ron Stutts 1/18/2011 True
